The “thumbs up” given by New Jersey voters on Election Day to the dedication of gas tax proceeds to transportation projects promises to provide enough additional revenue to finance a $16 billion transportation program for the state, breathing new life into much-needed road and infrastructure improvements. According to NJ officials, the state anticipates a revenue stream of $1.16 billion a year from the new gasoline tax, more than $31 million a year from the increased tax on non-motor fuels and nearly $40 million annual from a diesel surcharge.
