Starting in December 2017, the MTA plans to lease 10 electric buses to test the feasibility of electric vehicle technology in New York City public transit. Governor Cuomo’s announcement of this pilot follows the completion of a study of best practices in the electric bus market and aligns with New York’s goal of being a leader in sustainable energy initiatives. The MTA has secured board approval on the first five buses and a lease for the additional five buses will be presented to the board later in the year. Electric buses have numerous benefits, including a lower noise level, the elimination of car exhaust, and energy efficiency.
